Artist Statement
One decade and four and a half years ago, in a hospital in Tucson, Arizona, a baby girl was born. She was an ordinary baby girl, who when older, will begin to learn more about herself. She will know her capabilities, strengths, weaknesses, and herself in general. This includes learning that she is a visual and kinesthetic learner, enjoys the artistic view of life, and being able to symbolize qualities of herself. This includes connecting visual with a question mark, a wood nymph with kinesthetic, and a spider web with art.
I first decided, when doing this artist statement, that I would pick a symbol from each tier of my mobile. Between all my visual symbols I decided upon the question mark because, in my opinion, this is the item that best represents me. Whenever I see something, anything, questions become barreling through my mind, trying to decipher everything there, the reason why is was like that, what were they thinking, anything to try and understand what is in front of me. This question mark was made out of clay because when I find the answer to one of my questions, ten more come from the answer, making me want to find the beginning of the whole thing. Clay comes from the Earth, which I believe we all began from. I colored it a certain way because the theme for that tier was mystery books, and usually all the questions are related to the criminal, thus the shiny red color, because it being red makes it stand out and red is the color I associate with crime, thus the sparkly red color.
For kinesthetic, I made a wood nymph with her head sticking out of the bark. This is so because wood nymphs are masters of disguise, and I consider blending into the environment kinesthetics because others could just sit there and be seen by everyone, while it takes effort to me invisible. The inspiration would be the theme of this tier, fantasy. I’ve read so many fantasy books, taking me to different places, experiencing new things, and I rarely come across a book with wood nymphs in them. I decided that this would be a way to introduce wood nymphs to others who would previously have no knowledge about them. The process of making this was a bit difficult because I couldn’t find that perfect piece of bark that would hold its head. Overall, however, this was one of the most enjoyable pieces to make.
Lastly, representing my interests would be a spider web. My interest would be art, the way everything made is like an art piece describing the creator of its greatness. So I made an artist, the spider, with its master piece, the web. One thing that really made me want to do this piece was the book, “Charlotte’s Web”, when the spider wed.as incorporating words into her web. Thus making something ordinary, extraordinary. The tier holding it up has the theme of adventure books, in all those adventure books, there is always something heart thumping in it. The material that was made into making my art piece was pipe cleaners because it was one of the lighter weight material I could use. The spider was made of clay so the spider would be more defined.

I think the purpose of this project was to fully understand force and the different things that applies force on everyday things. Also so we could learn more about us as an individual, meet new people since it is a new year, and what we need to work on when doing projects in the future. What I learned most form it, however, would be the use of material and how over complicating things at the very beginning can be difficult for you in the end to complete.
What I enjoyed most about this project was when all the mobiles were finished because I learned a lot about them and I would have a reason to start a conversation with someone. Another reason why I enjoyed when all the mobiles were finished was because I could see how they used different materials so we could see more details to it or to incorporate the theme into it (the theme of the mobile was optional, it is when all the parts of the mobile are connected with an idea, for example my theme was fiction books). Also because I really enjoyed how people describe themselves as and how they themselves were incorporated into the project.
For me the most challenging part of the project was incorporating all my ideas to the mobile and balancing them. Projecting all my ideas to the mobile was quite difficult because I had all these brilliant ideas to make it better, more eye appealing, that I sometimes worried more about the decor of the mobile rather than the other aspects. This is also why I had a hard time balancing them, because I was mostly just making the symbols pretty, they were at times not durable enough and I had to do them again, thus changing the weight of the symbol and throwing the balance off.
If I had a chance to do this project over again, I would only change the way I managed my time because I tried hard and did my best for this project, so I wouldn't change any of the visual aspects of it. The time management, however, could have been greatly approved. As stated in the previous paragraphs, I had so much work to do, and focused my time on the wrong area, that I was somewhat short on time. However, overall, nothing would be changed because if not for the experience I have received from this project, I wouldn't have the knowledge that goes along with it.
