What went well?
Something that I felt went well was how efficiently I used the time and was able to get my work done within the interval of which we had to finish the work. I say this because due to a mistake I did when doing the blueprint, I had to redo the blueprint within a period of three days. This is so because the final product of this was also due in the three day limit, so I had to have completed both the second blueprint and the final draft which needed to be colored. Another way that I felt showed how I used time efficiently was when I was coloring the art work because I was able finish coloring it within an hour, I think this is due to my fear of it being late and getting a bad grade on this assignment. This is why I think using time efficiently was something that worked well for me.
What did not go well?
Something that I felt did not go well was the production of the blueprint for the design. The reason being for this is because I feel that the design could have been better and I had misunderstood the directions. The design could have been better by either creating larger shapes that would bring more attention to the illustration or by creating a simple design that did not have too much pictures or shapes in the design so they seem to be fighting for attention. Another reason that the first blueprint did not go well would be due to the fact I used the wrong type of material when creating it. I had mistakenly used the wrong type of paper, which normally would not have made a difference, however with the type of paper I used, it was much easier to create shapes and the idea of this project was to see the difficulty of previous mathematicians that helped to create geometry. That is why I feel the the production of the first blueprint for the design did not go well.
How did you incorporate geometry into your design?
I incorporated geometry into my design by creating a pointed arc, an ellipse or also known as the middle of the sun, and the moon. The pointed arc is a part of geometry because to create one you need the use of a compass and a straight edge, the straight edge is used to create the straight line, but also to help find the middle of the shape which the line would intersect. You then proceed to create circles, various times if needed, to find the one where a circle goes through the middle and makes half of the arc, you then do this to the other side to finish the pointed arc. An ellipse is part of geometry because one needs to create two circles using the compass so that they intersect with one another, like a venn diagram, and then use a straight edge so it looks like an oval with two circles inside, or an ellipse. The moon was also an example of geometry because it involved the use of a compass and a straight edge. I used the compass to create a circle and to also change the moon from that of a full moon to a crescent moon, which involved making another circle but only showing a part of the circle that is inside the first circle. The straight edge was then used to create the image of a shadow, or the shaded part of the moon, thus completing the moon. This was how I had incorporated geometry into my design.
How did you utilize one of the Habits of Mind?
I utilized one of the Habits of Mind by connecting the information given to us and processing them in a way that they represented more that ordinary shapes, but images that one might see throughout the whole day. I was connecting the geometry we used to everyday things that happened, such as the sun rise, the changing of the sun, and the nightfall with stars around. I also used the Habits of Mind Connection by finding the basics of everything that I saw and changed them in a way that they could have been represented as basic shapes, for example a shirt. To change the shirt into different basic shapes one could picture the base of the shirt as a square with circles going in a line down the shirt with a pair of triangles near the throat of the shirt. This was how I was able to utilize one of the Habits of Mind.
What would you change about this mini project? Improvements?
Something that I would change about this mini project would be to make it more open ended. I say this as in, try and find a way that the image would still give off a light of color when brought up to the light, but include science to try and describe how or what else could they have used. This is so because I feel that everyone essentially did the same thing, and I think it would be more interesting and creative to show this same thing and teach the same lessons, just with an individualized twist to each one of the products. Other than this, I had really enjoyed doing this project because the coloring portion was a fun yet simplistic thing to do which helped clear my mind from stress.
